What is the difference between Running and Walking Shoes ?
I have been using running shoes instead of walking shoes for years! It’s a fact, most of the walkers like me often wear running shoes instead of walking shoes since we don’t know the basic differences between the two. At first glance, walking and running seem very similar activities. But the two activities are really quite different. Manufacturers/marketers put in much focus into running shoes and have walking shoes only for the sake of market placement.
As we walk, the body’s weight is distributed more evenly on the foot, than when we run. When walking, our body weight rolls from the heel, through the ball to toes. This rocking-chair like motion requires our feet to absorb the shock of only 1-2 times your body weight with each step. And, during walking there are points where both feet are firmly on the ground, dividing weight. Running, on the other hand (or foot for that matter) requires the support of at least 2-3 times your body weight and each stride has moments with neither foot on the ground. With each step, the outer heel absorbs most of the impact before distributing weight through the foot in an S motion through toe off.Walking shoes are designed with the specific body mechanics and strike path of walking in mind. They are constructed to be more flexible through the ball of the foot to allow a greater range of motion through the roll of the forefoot. They also have greater arch support to protect where the force is heaviest on the foot. Running shoes, in contrast, have more cushioning in the heel–the point of impact–and less protection through the ball of the foot. The amount of heat generated in the running motion is greater, so running shoes also are made with a higher amount of mesh to keep feet cool during exercise.
Comfortable as soon as you put them on: Comfort is the most important aspect when looking for good walking shoes. Your perfect pair of walking shoes should be comfortable as soon as you put them on. Don’t expect them to expand much later. Be sure your foot has enough room in the toe box. A comfortable walking dependent on how breathable and good fit your footwear is. Breathable means it should have made with mesh that allows air to flow in-out and around your feet. This will help your feet keep cool, evaporate sweat thus maintain hygiene, prevent painful blisters.
Flexible and light weight: A walker’s foot hits heel first and then rolls gradually from heel-to-toe. You want a flexible sole that bends easily at the ball of the foot. Next, you should look for a shoe that is light weight. The last thing you want is heavy clunky shoes that tire you up quickly.
Flat: Look for a low, supportive heel that rounds (or bevels) in. A thick heel or one that flairs out will cause your foot to slap down rather than roll. This slows down forward momentum.
Understand your arch type: You can determine your arch type by simply looking at your old shoes! Or refer this image Or by dampening your foot and placing it on a piece of paper. What does your footprint look like? If you see don’t see much of a footprint on arch portion you have a high arch. If it is full or wide printed, your feet are flat. People with high arches may be prone to stress because of the lack of natural shock absorption on footwear. Such people should look for footwear with cushioning to alleviate this problem. If your feet are flat, they may not support your body well, leading to muscle and joint stress in your feet and knees. Walking shoes that are more structured will give you stability. Look for shoes with medial (inside) support to limit over-pronation and support your feet.
Price: If we look at sports shoes we often “get what we pay for.” But the the good pair of walking shoes are the one that doesn’t put too much pressure on your wallet. A good pair of walking shoes with all the basic necessities should come anywhere between Rs. 2500-4500.
People fail to understand the benefits of walking until they start doing. Walking is a lifestyle that we choose to remain healthy and happy. A good pair of walking shoes will not only motivate us to follow the regime of walking also keep our feet safe. We are lucky as these days manufacturers are continuously bringing some really good products that suits almost everyone’s expectations. Just follow the above our ultimate buyers guide to help you pick out the best walking shoes for you.
